If ever school could be described as ‘cool’, this would be it. With 500-plus applicants a year for just over 100 places, competition for places is high. Happy Harrodians are very much the norm and word is getting out about this Shangri-La school in Barnes, with its Italianate courtyards and 25 acres of leafy loveliness, where the winner of an art competition gets to hang out with Anish Kapoor and parents can go on the skiing holidays. The popular café can get a bit lively on the celebrity front when a generous peppering of famous parents park their four-wheeldrives on the Harrodian gravel, all appreciating the fact that the school drama department regularly makes it to the Edinburgh Fringe. The secret of this unique place is undoubtedly out, as the gap continues to narrow between its local reputation – a country club for kids – and the experience of those on the inside – it’s possible to achieve high standards without being tense and worried about doing it.
